VOA 70 Years – a Celebration

VOA Director David Ensor at podium during 70th anniversary eventThe Voice of America celebrated 70 years of broadcasting this year, and marked this milestone on Wednesday, March 7th, with a special event at VOA headquarters in Washington, DC. High points of the afternoon included video tributes from President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and the Dalai Lama. These video tributes are available to the media.

The event also brought together distinguished guests, former VOA directors, members of the Broadcasting Board of Governors and current and former employees of VOA, all coming together to share their experiences from the agency’s rich history and look to its exciting future.

South Sudan: Building a New Nation
Washington, D.C. — February 10, 2011 — Voice of America invited journalists, bloggers, and all interested to attend or view a special VOA discussion and webcast Thursday, Feb. 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at VOA headqurters. Discussion focused on the challenges, realities, and opportunities facing the southern Sudanese as they work towards forming their new country.

Our panel included:
• Andrew Natsios, Distinguished Professor at Georgetown University and former U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan;
• Ezekiel Lol Gatuoth, Head of Mission to the United States and the United Nations for the Government of Southern Sudan; and
• John Tanza Mabusu, co-host of VOA’s Sudan in Focus broadcast.

Egypt Votes: Challenges and Prospects

Washington DC — December 2, 2010 — Voice of America invited journalists and bloggers to attend a panel discussion and webcast looking ahead to Egypt’s upcoming parliamentary elections.

Our audience joined VOA at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16 for a look at the political players and developments leading up to this parliamentary election, and what the results may mean for Egypt’s presidential race next year. Moderated by VOA’s Mohamed Elshinnawi, our panel included:

• Karim Haggag: Director of the Egyptian Press and Information Office in Washington, D.C.;
• Amb. Edward Walker: former U.S. Ambassador to Egypt;
• Prof. Saad Eddin Ibrahim: prominent Egyptian sociologist, author and human rights activist; and
• Elizabeth Arrott: VOA Cairo Bureau Chief and Regional Correspondent, remote from Cairo.
